Startdotng is a pre-internship programme for complete beginners and my decision to participate in the Pre-internship has turned out to be one of the best in the advancement of my career in tech.
The classes are delivered online through Slack - an app which enhances the interactiveness of the classes and the mentors are quite engaging in their delivery. These classes are tailored for people with little or no experience in tech and the mentors have been patient in bringing everyone board, addressing questions posed during and after each session.
The lessons ranged from HTML, CSS, Javascript. We had introductory classes to PHP, Digital Marketing and Machine Learning. We also had classes that prepared us for the soft skills to succeed in tech or in any career part.
We were also given the room to practice our new skills through tasks. The task involved building a CV through pure HTML. We were asked to improve the CV as we learned additional skills such as CSS and JavaScript.
We hosted the finished CV which makes use of the three web tool — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
They have been important in enhancing our learning during the course of the internship.
To introduce us to the role of collaboration in software development, we were also grouped into teams. My team, Team Berlin, created a website called gift-a-pad to help promote healthy menstrual hygiene for females.
This project — indeed the program as a whole — has helped us build friendships as we collaborate to get tasks done. We also organised meetups to help us get better acquainted and practice lessons from classes.
It has been a great opportunity to polish web development skills, learn new ways of doing things while gaining good experience at coding. We are really obliged to all the knowledgeable professionals who provided guidance and mentor-ship during this period.
Startdotng is a wonderful platform for anyone beginning or furthering a career in the tech industry and we can’t wait to start the main internship.
